Structure and orientation of the imidazolium cation at the room temperature ionic liquid/Si[O.sub.2] interface measured by sum-frequency vibrational spectroscopy
Article Abstract:
The sum-frequency vibrational spectroscopy (SFVS) is used to examine both the effect of alkyl chain length and anion composition on the 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium ([C.sub.n]min, n = 4, 6, 8,, 10 and 12) structure and orientation at the room-temperature ionic liquid (RTIL)/Si[O.sub.2] interface. The results have indicated that the length of the alkyl chain dictates to a large degree the orientation of the imidazolium cation at the surface, regardless of anion composition.

Correlation between quasielastic scattering and configurational entropy in an ionic liquid
Article Abstract:
Low-frequency Raman spectra are described for the ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([bmim]P[F.sub.6]) in glass, supercooled liquid and normal liquid phases. The linear dependence between intensity of quasielastic Raman scattering and configurational entropy has offered insights into the nature of dynamical processes probed by low-frequency Raman spectra of ionic liquids.
